Does a VPN slow down home internet?

A VPN adds some overhead because traffic is encrypted and routed through a remote server, so a small speed drop and slightly higher latency are normal. On a fast fiber connection the hit is usually minor for browsing and streaming. Choosing a nearby server and a modern protocol keeps the slowdown small; heavy gaming is the use case most sensitive to it.
