Data Cap
A data cap is a monthly ceiling on how much you can download and upload before the provider throttles you or bills overage fees. Caps commonly sit around 1 TB on cable plans. Most fiber providers have dropped caps entirely, which is a real advantage for 4K-streaming or multi-person households.
DOCSIS
DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) is the standard that lets cable companies deliver internet over the same coaxial lines that carry TV. DOCSIS 3.1 supports gigabit downloads but far slower uploads, which is why cable plans are almost always asymmetric. DOCSIS 4.0 narrows that gap where it is deployed.
DSL
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) delivers internet over traditional copper phone lines. It is widely available and cheap but slow, with speed that degrades the farther you sit from the provider's equipment. Where fiber or cable exist, DSL is usually a last resort; several providers are actively retiring it.

Mbps vs MB/s
ISPs advertise speed in megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes and download managers show megabytes per second (MB/s). Because a byte is eight bits, divide Mbps by eight to estimate MB/s: a 100 Mbps plan downloads at about 12.5 MB/s. Knowing the difference prevents thinking your plan is underperforming.
Mesh Backhaul
Backhaul is the link a mesh system uses to carry traffic between its nodes and the main router. Wired (Ethernet) backhaul is fastest and most stable; wireless backhaul is easier to set up but shares airtime with your devices. Poor backhaul, not weak coverage, is the usual reason a mesh network feels slow.
Multi-Gig
Multi-gig plans deliver speeds above 1 Gbps, commonly 2, 5, or even 8 Gbps, and are increasingly offered by fiber providers. Realizing them requires matching hardware: a multi-gig ONT, router, Ethernet cabling, and network cards. For most households a 1 Gbps plan is still plenty; multi-gig suits heavy simultaneous uploaders.

Wi-Fi 6
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the wireless standard that improves performance in homes with many devices, not just peak speed for one. Features like OFDMA and better scheduling reduce congestion when phones, TVs, and smart-home gear all compete. A Wi-Fi 6 router is worth it once you pass roughly a dozen connected devices.
Wi-Fi 6E
Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 into the newly opened 6 GHz band, giving compatible devices a wide, interference-free lane. It shines for gigabit-plus fiber plans where the older 5 GHz band becomes the bottleneck. Both the router and your devices must support 6E to benefit.
