This recurring charge, often $10-$15 a month, covers the router or gateway the provider supplies. On cable it is usually avoidable by buying your own modem and router; on fiber the provider-owned ONT/gateway is frequently mandatory. Over a two-year plan the fee can quietly add $300 or more.
